FLARE: The Flagler Review’s team celebrates their 2026 issue

By Gabriella Palomo

Flagler College B.F.A. students’ work decorates the background for the readings. Rows of chairs filled the east room as Flare editors and published writers read through the new issue. Behind the podium hung a heavily textured painting of a striking, one-eyed, sharp-toothed red figure.

A table displays old and new issues, stickers, bookmarks and informational flyers. Guests left the launch party with Flare merchandise in hand, which was displayed to the right of the east room entrance. This yearly set-up encourages people to learn more about Flare and contribute to Flagler College’s literary journal.

Flare’s student-made collage banner hangs at the entrance of the museum. On their last Monday meeting, the CRW215 class, the course for Flare editors, met at their classmate Gia Fierro’s house to put together this display. It took them their regular class time from 5 to 6:15 p.m. to put together recycled materials already gathered by crafty poetry editor Fierro.

A bright blue lime-flavored mocktail represents the colors of the new Flare issue. The idea for a blue drink at the event belonged to Myke Bolivar, a poetry editor. As a hospitality and tourism management major, Bolivar used their skills in event planning to organize the launch party.

Phoebe Lutes performs soulful covers with her guitar and powerful voice at the museum’s main gallery. Lutes arrived at the event early and prepared with homemade sourdough bread, spread and kombucha. As a returning editor, she was excited to provide guests with music, snacks and a reading of one of the newly published poems.

Student editors surprise guests with typewriter poetry as they enjoy art and music in the main gallery. Ava Bellflower, a creative non-fiction editor, was trained for the event by Dr. Brad Rowe, who provided Flare with this typewriter.

The 2026 Flare editors gather on the steps of the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum before their long-anticipated launch party. After a smooth and timely semester of editing, publishing and planning, the team was happy to celebrate their work.
