WFCF Presents Radio Drama

By Laura Croft | gargoyle@flagler.edu

On Oct. 30 and 31 at 8 p.m., Flagler College Radio will be presenting the radio drama, “War of the Worlds” by H.G. Wells.

It has been 70 years since its first broadcast on the Columbia Broadcasting System in 1938.

Local actors from A Classic Theatre will be performing the roles and station manager Dan McCook will be providing the sound effects.

“War of the Worlds” is an early sci-fi novel about the invasion of England by aliens from Mars. When it was first performed on the radio, many listeners believed that an actual martian invasion was in progress.

Over the years, there have been many adaptations to the story.

Director Jean Rahner was inspired by a love of “War of the Worlds.”

In fact, it is her favorite movie, and she said with Halloween coming up, it seemed to be an appropriate show for a new theatre company.

She also said many of the actors remember hearing the original and they will follow the same script.

Rahner said she loves radio dramas and this is to be the first in a series of dramas and comedies scheduled by A Classic Theater. Right now, she is waiting for a catalog of more than 3,000 old radio scripts, mostly from CBS. She plans on doing four dramas a year.
