The season hasn’t opened the way coach Bo Clark and the Flagler men’s basketball team would have hoped.

The Saints opened the season on Nov. 16 against Northwood University. The game was only the second in the history of Northwood basketball, but this wasn’t a normal first year squad.

Under the direction of NCAA great Rollie Massimino, the Northwood Seahawks had several players on their team that, according to Clark, were NCAA Div. I-type players.

Abbey-Nowatzki looks to build women’s hoops program throughout season

It has been a rough start to a challenging season for the Flagler Saints women’s basketball team.

The ladies were defeated on Nov. 2, in an exhibition game against the Jacksonville University Dolphins, 76-47. On Nov. 8, the Saints faced another tough exhibition match-up against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, refusing to go down without a fight, but losing 64-56.

As Flagler College continues to make its transition from the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the athletes at Flagler College are subject to something they are not accustomed to — drug testing, which was done very little, if at all, in the NAIA.

Wanted: Assistant Sports Editor

Next semester will be my fourth as Gargoyle Sports Editor and for the third time, I’ll be looking for an assistant.

For the last year, my assistant has been Melissa Bear, of Flagler volleyball fame. But Melissa is graduating and that leaves the spot underneath my name on page three empty. Melissa has been a great assistant and I wish her well as she moves on with her life after The Gargoyle. A L.A.G. period, if you will.

While Flagler College’s move to the NCAA is official, where it will fall in Div. II remains unknown. While Flagler has explored the Sunshine State Conference, a final decision is in a holding pattern.

Anticipation already building for next season, two recruits signed

With their first season of NCAA Div. II ball in the books, the Flagler Volleyball team is already excited for what next year may hold.

“I think everybody’s excited. It’s almost like they can’t wait for next year to be here already,” Coach Taylor Mott said.
