Stephanie Seltzer, and the rest of the women from Phi Alpha Omega, have recently raised close to $400 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Every year during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the club hosts a donation booth in support of breast cancer research. “The club booth was a great opportunity to reach out to the students about breast cancer awareness month and to raise money for a great organization,” said Seltzer. According to Phi Alpha Omega, the goal of the booth is to raise money to support the foundation, and to raise awareness with students.

“We raised around $250 in October for Susan G. Komen and this year it was nearly $400,” said Treasurer, Madlen Pockrant.

Phi Alpha Omega is an all-women service club that has approximately 24 sisters and 21 associates, or girls in line to become sisters.

The women work together to give back to the community and help non-profits bring awareness to their causes and reach their goals.

“Being a women’s service organization, and raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation that does research on how to combat breast cancer is something very important to the group,” said Historian Julie Hirshan.

The club will raise money again for the Komen Foundation in the spring with their annual golf tournament. This event was first started last year.

“In the spring of 2008, we started to hold our soon-to-be annual golf tournament, sponsored by Rally For the Cure,” said President, Sam Pflanz. “As of right now, it has been our largest fund raiser, not only for breast cancer but in general, raising over $3,300.”

Throughout the year, the club raises money and awareness for various charities besides Breast Cancer. “We recently had a bake sale to raise money for a relief effort for victims of recent hurricanes in Cuba,” said Hirshan.

According to Phi Alpha Omega, some other activities planned include: Walk America for March of Dimes, UNICEF boxes, Operation Christmas Child and Bachelor Bid. The organization noted that Bachelor Bid takes place in February and each year the funds go to a different charity.
