Local High School Football Phenomenon to Watch for the Future

Somourian Wingo, St. Augustine High School Football

One of Florida’s highly recruited football prospects emphasizes the importance of setting an example for the younger generation of athletes. Somourian Wingo is a six-foot-two, one hundred-and-eighty-pound wide receiver from St. Augustine who has received over thirty offers from colleges all over the country, and recently narrowed it down with the Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, and the Alabama Crimson Tide being his hottest options.

“I am blessed to be in the position I am in as far as being one of the best receivers and highest recruits to come through St. Augustine High School,” said Somourian Wingo. “I am beyond thankful for the position I am in, and I am so thankful for the love and support.”

According to 247sports.com, Wingo is in the top 30 of high school football players in Florida. He’s also ranked as a top wide receiver in the nation. He’s one of the most promising football players to come out of St. Augustine High School in recent years.

“He’s big and he attacks the ball with a large catch radius,” said Coach Brian Braddock. “Somourian is extremely hard-working and humble. He is easy to coach, and resists letting his recruiting attention go to his head.”

In the 2024 season, Wingo caught 65 passes for 1,040 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior and helped lead the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets to a successful 11-2 season and made it to the semifinals in Florida’s 4A playoffs.

Now that Wingo is starting to get national attention, he has a message to the younger generation of football players: “Keep working,” he said. “Anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Let it motivate you to prove them wrong.”

Wingo not only emphasizes putting in the demanding work, but also how important it is to remember your family, where you came from, and your passion for the sport. In fact, he became interested in football by watching his cousins play.

“Seeing them leave for football practice when we were younger always made me want to go with them. Once I got old enough for Pop Warner, I did the same. That’s where it started. What makes me so passionate is knowing that I have an opportunity to change my family’s life forever, and I’m just steps away,” he said. “What motivates me is my family, knowing that they are depending on me and I promised to make sure we’re set for life.”

Wingo preaches the importance of discipline, skill, hard work and motivation. He believes that the most successful athletes have consistency. He hopes to motivate and inspire other young football players in our community and nationwide.

Wingo is a walking example that St. Augustine High School can produce generational football talent. “I hope my achievements inspire others to want to do the same thing,” he said.
