A look at new competitors

In Greek mythology, Triton was the son of the Greek god of the sea Poseidon and goddess of the sea Amphitrite. Triton is known as the messenger of the deep, with the upper body of a man and a lower body of a fish.

At Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., however, a Triton comes in the form of male or female, tall or short, soccer, volleyball or tennis player.

The seventh-ranked Tritons beat the Flagler men’s soccer team 2-1 on Aug. 26 at Eckerd.

Although Flagler doesn’t play Eckerd this year in volleyball, Flagler’s middle blocker sophomore Leah Melton transfered to Flagler from there this past spring. Melton was a leader for the Tritons as a freshman, leading the Sunshine State Conference in blocking.

The school has a traditionally strong athletic program, according to Melton. “They are strong competitors, definitely beatable though,” she said.

The NCAA Div. II Lady Tritons were ranked sixth in the Sunshine State Conference at the start of the season.
