The boutiques of downtown St. Augustine are coming together to create a new event, Boutique Night, which will offer  discounts, refreshments and great shopping, starting Oct. 20.
Boutique Night will feature local boutiques including event creator, Anchor Boutique, as well as Fendi Boutique, Little Gypsy Boutique, Willow Boutique, Down the Rabbit Hole, Declaration Boutique, and the Closet.
For Richard Glover, who worked as a firefighter in New York City for 26 years, anniversaries are bittersweet.
Even though Glover and his wife, Janet, retired to Palm Coast, Fla., five or six years ago, the wounds of Sept. 11, 2001, have not yet healed.

When I moved to St. Augustine from Gainesville two years ago, I never dreamed I’d one day sit on a sidewalk shooting the breeze with two older black men taking pictures of a former slave cabin and sharing neighborhood gossip.
I was excited to find my own cheap apartment down the street from campus in Lincolnville in August 2009. I was told I was moving into a “mixed neighborhood” by my landlady, but didn’t understand the phrase.

For Jim Darlington, assistant curator of reptiles at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, facing danger on a daily basis is just part of the job.
“When you know what you’re doing, you can put yourself in danger,” Darlington, who has worked at the zoological park for 17 years, said. “When I’m in [the alligator lagoon] working with the animals, I always have to be on my toes.”

Davis Shores is a neighborhood in St. Augustine’s city limits littered with the towering-two story complexes and mowed lawns of middle class suburbia. But on Feb.17, police found that some residents of this community right across the Bridge of Lions had materials to make what some say is the worst drug in the world.

Jerry Kass, 96, is a retired Marine and long time Jewish resident of St. Augustine. He first visited the city in 1930, moved there in 1937 and has lived across the street from Flagler College, then Ponce de León Hotel, ever since.
Kass’ house has a large front porch. The mat at the door has a picture of a dustpan and a broom that says Schmootz, and he has a banner nailed into the door frame that says Shalom. Kass spends most of his time sitting on this porch.
