Non-profit strives to supply dogs to the disabled

Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) is a local non-profit organization that provides assistance dogs to individuals with disabilities. There is no fee for the dogs and they are highly trained to help the disabled with everyday activities.

Most of the individuals are confined to a wheelchair so they are unable to accomplish simple tasks that are taken for granted by many. When they cannot pick up their keys off the ground or reach the counter to pay the cashier, the dog will be there to help them. Canine Companions mission is to enhance the lives of people with disabilities. If they can make a difference in one person’s life and make everyday activities easier, it is a success.

On December 11 at the St. Augustine Beach Pier, CCI will be hosting an event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event will raise awareness and money for the non-profit organization. Private donations and fundraisers is how the CCI supports itself.

Grace Walsh a dog owner and animal lover plans on attending the event with her 2 dogs. ” I don’t think people realize how beneficial dogs can be, they are a companion for the disabled,” said Walsh. She is excited to see what the event has to offer for the community and is looking forward to the walk with her dogs Stella and Melody.

CCI encourages participants to bring their dogs to the event for the pet friendly walk. There will also be activities for the whole family such as a bounce house and obstacle course for the kids. A silent auction will be held with the chance to win great prizes.

There will be opportunities to ask Veterinarians and Professional Trainers questions about your pet. Participants will be able to meet and greet Canine Companion puppies and can learn how to be a puppy raiser.
