Edie Lederer, Chief United Nations Correspondent with the Associated Press, will be the next speaker for the 2008-2009 Flagler College Forum on Government and Public Policy.

Lederer will speak Feb. 12, at 7 p.m., in the Flagler College Auditorium. Her topic will be “Ignoring International News at Your Peril.”

Since 1966, Lederer has been with the Associated Press, where she has worked on every continent except Antarctica, covering wars, famines, nuclear issues and political upheavals. She made history by becoming the first woman assigned full time to the AP staff reporting the Vietnam War.

She also covered the 1973 Middle East war, the war in Afghanistan, the first Gulf War, the conflict in Northern Ireland, the end of the war in Bosnia, the civil war in Somalia, and the aftermath of the genocide in Rwanda. Her global background has proven to be useful in her current assignment as AP’s chief correspondent at the United Nations.

On top of her many achievements and awards she is a co-author of “War Torn,” a book by nine women who covered the Vietnam War.

Other speakers for the 2008-2009 season include:

  • March 24 — Jim Toedtman, Editor, AARP Bulletin, Topic: “What Happened to Obama’s Agenda”
  • April 1 — Cindy Skrzycki, Columnist, Bloomberg, Topic: “The Real Work of Government in the Obama Administration”

All forums take place in the Flagler College Auditorium, 14 Granada St., at 7 p.m. Forums are free and open to the public, but seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign language interpreters are provided.
