FLARE Magazine Prepares for its 37th Annual Launch

By Gabriella Palomo

Flagler College’s literary magazine, FLARE: The Flagler Review, awaits its 37th publication, and its student-run team is excited to celebrate.

This year’s launch party will take place on May 1 at the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum at 5 p.m. and will welcome students, faculty, staff and contributors for an intimate experience of art and community.

“We want everyone who has supported FLARE to be part of this moment,” said Lauren Tivey, FLARE’s faculty supervisor. “It’s a celebration of the students’ work and of the vibrant literary community we’ve built here–and beyond.”

FLARE was established by students in Flagler’s English department in 1989 and has grown into a journal with national and international reach. Students who work on the magazine often take their immersive educational experiences into publishing careers.

“Our student editors are involved in every aspect of production,” Tivey said. “From reviewing submissions to shaping the magazine’s voice, they develop skills that often lead to internships and careers in the literary world.”

FLARE has grown to face a competitive submission process with this year’s submissions including 785 entries that are all reviewed during the spring 2026 semester, making the acceptance rate 5.88%.

“We’ve had to narrow it down to the absolute best pieces. We’re choosy, and that ensures that the magazine reflects a consistently high standard of work,” Tivey said.

Ranging from technically proficient poetry to bold and quirky artwork, the magazine embraces an exploratory spirit, and returning editors help guide the process of embracing fresh perspectives of new student contributors.

“We’ve never known exactly what will capture our attention until we read it, and that unpredictability is part of the excitement,” Tivey said.

Behind the scenes of FLARE is a labor of love. Reading sessions are long, deadlines are tight and funding relies on a combination of school support, donations and fundraising events like Roar & Raise.

“It’s the classic story of a small literary magazine—passion, determination, begging, and praying,” Tivey said.
