Saints nab first soccer wins

Men’s soccer snaps 14-game losing streak against Thomas University

By Ryan Day | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Flagler midfielder Sean Gormley can’t help but laugh when asked what the first victory of the season means to a Flagler’s men’s soccer team that was on the verge of a 15th straight winless game.

“There are so many games where we’ve played well in the first half and then just let it get away,” Gormley said. “To get up on them [Thomas] and finish the way we did raises everyone’s confidence.”

The Saints have started the 2007 season 0-8-1 and were looking at a potential 10th winless game of the season as they took the field against Thomas University on Oct. 6. They notched the season’s second win Nov. 14 at home with a 2-1 victory over Saint Xavier University of Chicago.

St. Augustine Amateur Golf Tournament hosts ranked golfers

By Jennifer Seton | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Flagler College will host nationally-ranked golfers from around the country as they come to participate in the St. Augustine Amateur at the St. John’s Golf Club Oct. 19 – 21.

The tournament consists of 72 golfers. The Tournament Committee invited 67 of those amateurs and the remaining five qualified through participation in the Local Qualifier on Oct. 7 as the top-five finishers.

Some teen golfers will have the opportunity to serve as caddies for the top-ranked amateur players in the tournament. Members of The First Tee of St. Johns County and St. John’s County high school golf teams, ranging in ages from 12 to 18, will be selected to serve as caddies.

Women’s cross country team adds new coach

By William Sandberg | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Flagler’s men’s and women’s cross country teams are already halfway through their seasons, but with a new women’s coach, and having moved to NCAA, they are already looking ahead in anticipation for next season.

For Christy Calderon-Castelli, the new women’s head coach, it has been a learning experience, but the women runners enjoy finally having a coach of their own.

“Having two separate coaches now has helped everyone out,” senior captain Jamie Stanish said. “It’s nice to have another female to relate to.”

Basketball and business make for strong friendship

By Viv Helwig | gargoyle@flagler.edu

When you think of Business Professor Lou Preysz and Men’s Basketball Coach Bo Clark you think of two men in separate fields, with separate goals, and separate backgrounds.

Preysz, an ex-military man who reached the rank of Captain, and Clark, an “ex-gunner” who ended his college basketball career as the all-time leading scorer for UCF, have more in common than first meets the eye. Under the surface, they both are men of faith, like to keep things lively by constantly cracking jokes, and have banners hanging in the Flagler gym.

Injury bug bites Saints

Team manages to stay competitive despite injuries

By Devon Jeffreys | gargoyle@flagler.edu

The roller coaster ride that has been the 2007 season is headed toward its final loop and the Flagler Saints volleyball team may finish without two of their most experienced players.

Saints senior Jessica Wedemyer, injured earlier in the season, will miss the rest of the year with a knee injury and junior Leah Melton may miss the conclusion of the season with a stress fracture in her right tibia.

The injuries, coupled with inconsistencies on the court have left the Saints with a 16-11 record with eight games to play. The team will now have to work out the kinks without both Wedemyer and Melton.

Flagler basketball gets thrust into national spotlight when Saints take on Div. I National Champion Florida Gators

By Devon Jeffreys | djeffreys@flagler.edu

When their bus pulls into Gainesville on Oct. 31, the Flagler Saints men’s basketball team will be in for a treat.

The Saints will get their shot at the two-time defending national champion Florida Gators at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville on Nov. 1.

Although the game is a big deal for the school and the program, it is an exhibition game and Saints head coach Bo Clark is not interested in who wins or loses.

Major League Baseball gets interesting

By Eric D. Hopkins | gargoyle@flagler.edu

The first series of the 2008 playoffs didn’t turn out the way some Flagler College students were hoping for their hometown teams.

Although the Yankees were the wild card team, New Yorker Sean Hogan, senior, still felt his Bombers were going to be the team to beat. “I feel like this is our year, again, A-Rod has had the best season of his career and you best believe he’ll carry that into the playoffs this year.”

A-Rod didn’t carry his MVP like season into the playoffs with only 1 RBI in his 15 at-bats.
