Monday represents the beginning of Flagler College’s 10th Communication Week, presented by the Public Relations Society for Students in America. During this week, Flagler College will host numerous speakers who are professionals in various fields of communication.
Lowell Bergman, a nationally renowned reporter who worked for CBS’ 60 Minutes, as well as PBS Frontline, will start off the week as the first presenter. Bergman will be followed by a variety of other presenters, including Kirk Damato from BuzzFeed, Maria Coppola, the CEO of Coppola Public Relations, and Lorraine Portman, an award winning filmmaker and screenwriter.
“This is going to be a big year for Flagler’s annual Communication Week, with it being the 10th anniversary,” Vice President of PRSSA Brittni Allen said. “There will be panels of professionals from varying fields ready and willing to answer questions students may have.”
Allen is looking forward to Damato’s presentation the most this year. Damato is a Flagler alum and a former A&E editor for the Gargoyle.
“I believe Damato will be one of the most relatable speakers and inspire a lot of students to realize that working in the communication field is not one specific skill. It is more effective to be a qualified jack of all trades,” Allen said.
Although Allen is excited to hear from a BuzzFeed professional, COM department chair Tracy Halcomb is most looking forward to hearing from keynote speaker Bergman.
“He has so many interesting tales to tell about the stories he’s covered. He has a message that will resonate with not only communication majors, but all students on campus,” Halcomb said.
Halcomb is also excited about the alumni panel that will be taking place.
“We have some pretty high profile alumni coming back,” Halcomb said. “We have a balanced variety of speakers.”
COM week can help push students’ career forward, offering opportunities for internships and jobs.
“We bring these industry professionals to you to talk with and pick their brains. You have a contact now to help you with that internship process,” Halcomb said. “Different professionals are always willing to network with students, hand out business cards and contact information to set students on the right path to working their dream internship.”
The first presentation will begin at 11 a.m in the Gamache-Koger Theater, located in the Student Center. Visit COM Week’s Facebook page for more information or check out the full schedule below.
