Extreme Makeover: St. Augustine Edition

Faded, spray-painted walls. A television that won’t turn on. A broken air-hockey table. Beanbag chairs with the stuffing oozing out. A brown, stained sofa.

The students at St. Augustine’s Sebastian Middle School don’t have much of a rec room. Christened the “Eagle’s Nest” (Sebastian’s mascot is an eagle), this space has been used since 1998 as a reward for students who tally up enough extra credit points. The “privileged” swarm in during recess—to a pile of disheveled board games on a dusty, laminate shelf.

Flagler College one step ahead of financial aid discussion

As college graduation rates continue to decline, Flagler College numbers remain above the national average.

More financial aid is needed to revive the declining statistics of college graduation, according to The American Dream 2.0, a coalition of the nation’s six leading higher-education associations.

Online games give fulfillment to identity

Steven Benner, an avid video gamer, enjoys playing all different types of video games. However, when I asked him what game he enjoys the most he said “World of Warcraft.” He plays this game in his spare time at his home, because it makes him happy.

“For me, Warcraft is not just a game. It is a way for me to live out my fantasies. I can do whatever I want within the realm of the game,” Benner said.

I’m a sarcastic, skeptical English and philosophy double-major who rejects cheesy inspirational messages that tell people to “live, laugh, love” or “‘live every moment like it’s your last.”

YOLO has recently replaced Carpe Diem as my most hated inspirational catch phrase. Did anyone think that we lived more than once? Clearly some trite, cheap, superficial, and abhorrent advice like YOLO is insufficient to inspire meaning and engender change.

Controversy continues over Second Amendment right

An increase in violence with use of guns throughout America has led to debates in Congress, leading Americans to believe tighter gun controls may be seen in the coming years.

On January 30, former US Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords, pleaded to Congress in attempt to persuade people to take action and to put a stop to the gun violence throughout the United States.
