Saints rout Cougars, 7-1

The Saints set off a bombardment of offensive scoring against the Saint Xavier University Cougars on Thursday, October 13, bringing the final score to 7-1.

Seven goals are the most scored by the Saints since September 2, 2006 against Brewton-Parker College. Flagler scored 8-0 in that game.

Mack Hough put the first point on the board by kicking into the left post with a pass from the middle from Brendan Murphy.

Murphy also assisted in Stephen Pratt’s goal less than two minutes later, setting Pratt up for a close shot from one yard out.

The Saints weren’t done yet. Johan Bergfeld scored his goal at 18:24 off of a turnover from 10 yards out. Flagler sat on a comfortable 3-0 lead, and would not give it up for the rest of the game.

Cougar’s Jeff Hiltrop rallied his team enough in the first half to score a goal off of a deflected cross from Kyle Breitenbach. Neither team would score again in the half.

The second half remained relatively quiet until Joseph Toby intercepted a bad-clearing pass from the Cougars and scored at the other end.

Zach Shanahan scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season back to back, in less than two minutes. His first came from a flick pass from Murphy where Shanahan skillfully placed into the bottom right corner. The second goal Shanahan slugged into the upper left from Marco Padilla.

To add the Saint’s seventh and final goal of the night, Padilla scored in the 83^rd minute. The assist was credited to Stephen Pratt.

Saint’s goalie Camp Bissell recorded three saves and only one goal allowed during 90 minutes of play. Kyle Held of the Cougars also played 90 minutes, allowing seven goals and saving five.

Flagler outshot Saint Xavier 19 to 15, but both teams were tied in corner kicks, having five each.
