The focus of the new Outdoors Club is to create an “appreciation, as well as conversation, of the outdoors,” Club Event Coordinator Molly Jane Hammond said.
The club was approved one month ago and Brandon Volbrecht, vice-president of the club, said around 30 people were at the first meeting.
To help cultivate a deeper understanding of the natural world, the club plans to utilize Florida’s state parks by canoeing, camping, snorkeling and bike riding. The club will do street clean-ups, beach clean-ups and other activities to promote an eco-conscious lifestyle.
“We can do all this stuff. We’re not a landlocked college,” senior April Vanderwal said.
The club members also plan to meet with park rangers and environmental agency councils to learn about their jobs and help them. Club President Melissa Kafel said, “A lot of people want to work with us.”
The club meets on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. in the Gazebo.
