Last SGA meeting talks future plans

This week’s Student Government Association meeting ended with President David Matulewicz thanking all the members for their support. This was the last meeting of the semester.

At the beginning of the meeting, Matulewicz recognized two members that showed “outstanding commitment” to SGA. They will receive certificates and $25 gift cards.

The Academics Committee report included a chart representing the results from the library hour surveys. First Chair Jim Stiller said that the most popular hours were from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

First Chair of Community Service Committee Stephanie Hyland talked about two upcoming events. The first is Stockings for Webster. This event took place Wednesday at Webster Elementary School. The second event is Shopping with the Saints. Big Brothers and Big Sisters are sponsoring the event which is Saturday, Dec. 5 at 10:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. Participants are meeting in the Student Center. The event is for Flagler students to join underprivileged children and pick out holiday gifts at Wal-Mart.

First Chair of Green Committee Chuck Riffenburg reminded members to attend the GMO “Future of Food” Movie Night on Wednesday.

First Chair of Publicity Committee Alicia Abbott informed members that the bus they voted on naming last meeting got into an accident. The committee will have to wait until the bus is repaired to decorate. She also mentioned that Dean of Student Services Daniel Stewart had made a few changes to her traffic court proposal. She will be reviewing those changes and making a decision in the future.

Matulewicz said, “this semester we’ve approved a couple clubs, we’ve established a club grant fund, we’ve got community gardens, a number of community service events and fundraisers, and the traffic court, which will go on in the future of the college.”

But, Matulewicz said that SGA has pretty aggressive plans going forward for next semester.

For the future, SGA plans to launch an ongoing on-campus event. All plans are tentative but, with the help of Spirit committee and Campus Concerns Committee, Matulewicz hopes this will be a new anchor for SGA.

His plans are to create a booth for the men’s basketball home games. According to Matulewicz, this booth will encourage students to go to the games, and is a good way for SGA to stay in contact with the students. SGA will give away prizes to students that are dressed up in Flagler gear and will also give away tickets to the basketball game.

The two bills that were supposed to be presented Tuesday will be pushed back to next semester’s meetings. These are: the smoking reform bill and the attendance policy reform bill.
