Gypsy Cab Co. has something for everyone

When I came to St. Augustine to go to Flagler, I knew I wasn’t moving to the most metro area. What I didn’t realize was that “downtown” meant shell shops, chocolate fudge and tourist traps. Even though I’m not from a big city, St. Augustine is still a little more rural then I’m used to. Sometimes “the South” can get on my nerves. Whenever I need to escape my Alligator Farm/ghost tour reality I dine out at Gypsy Cab Co. on Anastasia Island.

Self-proclaiming creator of “urban cuisine,” Gypsy’s food includes influences from Italian, German, Cajun, Mediterranean, classical European, Southern, Oriental, and Floribbean. This means they have a little bit of everything and something for everyone.

When I ate out at Gypsy on a Friday night I was surprised at how simple the dining room was inside. I didn’t feel like I was in a big city restaurant fighting for a table, but I suppose that’s a good thing. The server was friendly and efficient and he made my Shirley Temple just right. I ordered the Gypsy Chicken — a stuffed chicken breast — because I was told it was the best and my source wasn’t far off. It was delicious!

Gypsy Cab Co. is very unique because its menu changes every day. Luckily, there’s a good mix of everything so you can always find something you like. Dinner entrees are typically $15 to $21, and lunch is usually $6 to $11.

Other entrees I would recommend are the Muffalatto, Cuban Wrap, Chicken Pesada, Blackened Chicken Nachos, Caprice Salad, Braised Domestic Lamb Shank and Seafood Greek Islands. Oh, and they also have some really good desserts. If you don’t want to take my word for it, Gypsy Cab Co. has also been voted ‘Best Restaurant in St. Augustine’ by Folio Weekly nearly ten years in a row.

I’d say if your looking for a fun place to dine with friends, impress a date, or show mom and dad how cultured you’ve become while in college, Gypsy Cab Co. is the perfect place. Gypsy is open seven days a week, 363 days a year. Call (904) 824-8244 for more information.
