Flavors adds some flavor

Walking into a low lit room filled with paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling and Christmas lights hanging from the walls, Flavors Eatery has the right ambiance for a night filled with Indie-acoustic sounds.

Sitting at a small table next to the stage set up in the corner, I watch two musicians doing what they love. Mandy Sloan, a 20-year-old musician, plays acoustic guitar and adds her raspy vocals to her set. Sloan plays her own music well as some well-known favorites such as Coldplay’s “Yellow.”

Sloan approached the owner of Flavors, Jane Kavanagh, about two months ago requesting to play some of her music on Tuesday nights and some Saturdays to try and bring in the younger crowd from Flagler College.

About three weeks ago, 19-year-old Lydia Luce joined Sloan on the stage, adding the soothing sounds of the viola.

“We would love to see more and more students coming here,” said Sloan. “Its a great place to hang out and enjoy local music.”

In St. Augustine, it’s tough for the college students under 21 wanting to listen to local artists since most of the venues are bars. Flavors serves all ages and great food.

“I hope that because Flavors allows people of all ages that we start getting a good crowd in here,” said Luce. “It’d be great to get this place into an awesome hangout.”
