The Flagler College dance team has their first shot competing in a dance competition this year by competing in the Peach Belt Conference Dance competition in Columbus, Ga.
Sarah Gallo, in her first year as head dance coach at Flagler, is excited and anxious for the competition.
“I’m nervous never taking a team to competition before, but I’m also very excited,” Gallo said. “We will do well because the girls are really good.”
The dance team has also seen improvements from past years.
“From last year to this year, the girls have really pushed themselves, and have boosted their overall commitment,” Gallo said.
Even though the team has improved, there are still things that can be done to make the team even better.
“Now, we just need to feel each other’s energy and work on our togetherness and timing so we look sharper in competition,” Aryelle Cook, a dancer on the team, said.
Gallo also teaches dance outside of the dance team and sometimes needs the help of her dancers to get practices started.
Both captains of the team, Allison Parks and Nicole Gamerl, who recently won the Medal Student Athlete of the Month in January, help start warm-ups and really encourage the team members to push themselves.
“The girls really work hard by working on their technique and they also do their own choreography,” Gallo said.
“We just want to make our coach and school proud, and show we are more than just a basketball game half-time show,” Cook said.
