Flagler College Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Check out Flagler College as it celebrates its 40th anniversary last Wednesday on campus with a variety of activities, events and speeches. Students, faculty, administrators and staff rocked out all day with entertainment ranging from tricycle races to moonwalk climbing.


‘Ignite’ classes encourage student interaction

Christine Young is part of the biggest freshman class Flagler has ever seen, but she spends most of her time with the same group of people. She’s part of Ignite, Flagler College’s new learning community program.

Young and her 20-something classmates have three General Education courses together. After class they work on group projects which incorporate aspects of each class. The students are even together at night.

“You’re roomed with someone also in the program,” Young said.


Wii student tourneys begin

Freshman Calvin Meyer won the first Wii tournament held in the Virginia Room last Thursday. Meyer beat 29 other Flagler students that competed playing Mario Kart Wii, and received a $25 gift card to Target.

“I am very excited,” Meyer said after his win. Free sodas were offered.





So much for entry-level work

Many students opt for grad school, unique trips after graduation

English majors Mara Phillips and Julie Milo will both enter graduate school in the fall.

Phillips will work towards a master’s in education from the Univeristy of Florida and Milo will attend the Univeristy of South Carolina for a master’s in library sciences.

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the Peace Corps and some dysentery? For two Flagler College seniors, that’s the plan

Flagler College senior Rachel Manring has never left the United States, yet this summer she and her husband, senior Tristan Estes, will depart to Africa for two years as Peace Corps volunteers.

Inspired to see the world, the two decided joining the Peace Corps would be a good start. Manring has wanted to join the Peace Corps since a speaker for the program visited Flagler her sophomore year.


Students win at FPRA competition

Flagler College students Jessica Echterling and Bailey Toombs swept the student category at the Jacksonville-area chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association’s 2008 Image Awards.

The Image Awards recognize outstanding local public relations programs and promote the development of professionalism. The student category accepts entries from any college or university in the Northeast Florida area; Echterling and Toombs received the only two student honors at the April 3 awards – the Image Award and the Judges’ Award – for their 5K for United Way campaign.


Club UNITY hosts first event

Club UNITY will be hosting Hooray Day! Thursday, April 10 on the West Lawn.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include a barbecue, pride cookie decorating contest, and information tables from Ancient City Pride and GBLT. A marathon of the TV show “Will and Grace” will be shown on the Lawn at 6 p.m.

According to Craig Elliot, public relations director of Club UNITY, the goal of the event is to celebrate the diversity within the Flagler community.
