SGA approves Photography Club, defers Adventure Club

Student Government Association will soon allow students to weigh in on how SGA should spend its money.

SGA President David Matulewicz announced this during his executive report at Tuesday night’s SGA meeting. He said a mass e-mail will be sent to students with the current balance of each committee’s budget. SGA is asking students to send in thoughts on how it should spend committee money.

Eric Strasser asked SGA members for feedback on a project he’s working on. It’s called All Black-out Senior Night. He said the idea is to increase attendance at sports events and promote school spirit by having a Senior Night for the basketball players on the last game of the season. Strasser said everyone would be invited including students, faculty, staff, locals and tourists.

Rotaract President Amy Robinson presented to SGA members asking for $400 of Club Grant money. Rotaract is a community service club on campus. The money was approved and will be used to send 10 members to Give Kids The World, the club’s yearly project.

According to its Web site, GKTW is a project in Orlando that “provide[s] memorable, magical, cost-free experiences to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.” Robinson said that this year the club has more active members than previous years, moving from 14 to 40.

President Jacqueline “Kiki” Betesh presented a proposal for an Adventure Club to SGA members. Adventure Club would encourage students to be active outdoors, including biking, camping and kayaking. Due to issues with the club’s constitution, SGA members decided to table the proposal and bring it back next week with adjustments.

SGA members approved the proposal for a Photography Club that was presented by President Phil Sunkel. Photography Club is for anyone who wants to learn about the art medium. It will also link student photographers and provide a networking system that Flagler currently lacks.

SGA Treasurer Jeff Wheeler asked members to allocate $340 of miscellaneous funds to sponsor SGA in the Phi Alpha Omega Golf Tournament. The golf tournament is a yearly benefit for Susan G. Komen For the Cure. Members approved the money to be used for this event.

First Chair of Academics Committee Jim Stiller quickly reviewed adjustments to the Attendance amendment. Due to time, this issue was tabled for next week’s meeting.

SGA filled the two open chairs in their committees. The second chair of Publicity is Danielle Nesmith and second chair of Green Committee is Brendan Manley.

Also, at last week’s meeting, SGA members approved a Philosophy and Religion Symposium.
