Women’s basketball clinches first spot in Peach Belt tournament

For the first time, Flagler’s women’s basketball has secured a spot in the Peach Belt Conference tournament after an 88-77 win over Francis Marion University at home Feb. 20.

Treva Mason led five players in double figures as she scored 16 points and added 15 rebounds.

Flagler, 13-10 and 10-7 in the Peach Belt, will play in the conference tournament Mar. 7-10 at Columbus State University. It will be the team’s first appearance since the college joined the league in the 2009-10 season. At worst, the Saints will be the No. 3 seed in the East Division. Flagler has won six of its last seven games and improved its record at home to 10-1.

Williesha Spencer added 15 points and 10 assists while Simone High came off the bench to contribute 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Christina Brown tacked on 12 points and Jen Knurek just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Flagler converted 23 Francis Marion turnovers and cashed them in for 35 points. The Saints shot 55.2 percent and out-rebounded Francis Marion 43-34.
