Men’s soccer advances to quarterfinals

Flagler College men’s soccer team rolled through their opponents this past weekend in a tough two-game stretch. Their first game of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional tournament was played against Lees-McRae on Friday, Nov. 11 in South Carolina. Flagler scored a golden goal in overtime that gave them the 2-1 victory.

Flagler then played their next game on Sunday against Mars Hill College in the Southeast Regional final. The outcome wasn’t nearly as close as their previous game. Flagler took control from the beginning and didn’t stop until the end.

Theme nights prove to be huge success

Many may scoff at the theme-flavored events for home games presented by the Flagler Athletics Department, claiming they are silly and don’t do much for the sport.

But that is not the case. These events have dramatically improved the games for players and fans alike.

Freshman cross country runners discuss season

Last Saturday, the Flagler College men’s cross country team wrapped up their season with a strong performance at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals, finishing 13th out of 24 teams.

It has been a trying season for the Saints, battling injuries and adjusting to a new coach, but the team stuck together.

Pavements to Somewhere

I’ve crossed the finish line, but this crowd is unfamiliar.   My surroundings, unexpected.  Until now, it was a place I’d only dreamt about, and this is not what I predicted.

My cross-country season is over.  Practices have ceased.  My races are done.  Like so many other senior athletes — and like generations of athletes who have come before me — my status as a student-athlete has effectively come to an end.

I’ve wondered about this day for years.  How I would feel?  How I would cope?  It’s the evitable finish to a 4-year race that, before today, was obscure and insubstantial, existing only in my mind as a quietly ignored but perpetually imminent mystery.

Despite war, young couple perseveres

She spots her fiancé, Troy Edenfield — his familiar face hiding beneath a camouflage cap.  Her heart tells her to run and embrace him, but her mind locks her in place.

Florida musician to be honored at North Florida Folk Festival

If there is anyone who knows Florida’s history and can transform it into a song, Frank Thomas is the man. With over 500 songs under his belt and over 70 years in the music industry, the North Florida Folk Festival is honoring his talent and memorable lyrics on Nov. 12 at the North Florida Agriculture Museum.

Thomas’ inspiration came from his love of Florida and his family. He said his ancestors came to Florida in the late 18th century and he has carried on the tradition and history ever since. As a Florida native, he said he believes that people need to know the history of the land they live on.

Dealing with tourism discount demands

In an economy where prices are raising and job wages aren’t, tourists are used to getting a discount, and they often do, thanks to AAA, student, Florida resident and military discounts.

But when a place doesn’t offer these discounts, what makes people act like its a personal attack? Just because they’ve slapped on enough sunscreen to protect half the state of Florida from the perils of ultraviolent rays and they are still sunburned, they think everyone who is selling goods or services is going to do them a favor and take 10 percent off their purchase. Perhaps even get them in free just for stimulating the local economy.

Everyone deserves birthday presents

This past May, I drove six hours to go home to visit my friend for his twenty second birthday. Or rather, visit his grave.

Troy died on Oct. 13, 2008 in a motorcycle accident. On our way to his funeral, me and my best friend got lost. On our way to visit his grave, the same thing happened.

Everyone knows where Troy is buried, but none of us know how to get there. I cried on the way there to his funeral because I was afraid we were going to miss it. I wanted to cry on my way to visit, this time, because I felt that same sense of defeat.
