St. Augustine Fire Department and St. Johns County Fire Rescue evacuated the Proctor Library shortly before 5 p.m.

The library reopened at 6:15 p.m.

Wiley Hall also experienced possible fire issues. SAFD Lt. Jim Von Bretzel said Wiley Hall underwent a “smoke investigation.”

“It appears to be the furnace,” Von Bretzel said. “There wasn’t any smoke, flames, nothing like that.”

Senior communication major Ashley Kent, 22, noticed something smelled funny before her class on the third floor of the library at 5 p.m. “You could smell something burning,” Kent said.

Von Bretzel said three SAFD units responded to the Wiley Hall incident and one SAFD unit responded to library. He said the rest of the units at the library were county units.

Von Bretzel also said the two incidents are unrelated.

The St. Johns County Fire Rescue Lieutenant on scene declined comment as to what happened in the library. Flagler College also declined comment.

Von Bretzel said the library experienced the same type of furnace problems that Wiley Hall had.
