San Marco Avenue consignment shop offers used clothing, swaps

On San Marco Ave., next door to the sign for the Fountain of Youth, is a little consignment shop called Gabriel’s Closet. It is owned by Torree Alexander, who who wants to give St. Augustine the gift of gently used current fashions at affordable prices.

As you approach the pink front door, many locally consigned fine dresses and other pieces can be seen hanging in the windows and on stands out on the front lawn.

Alexander offers a little bit of everything. From jeans and T-shirts to sun dresses and prom dresses, as well as shoes, realistic designer-copy bags, jewelry and other accessories. Many of these items are from brand names like Juicy Couture, Abercrombie & Fitch, Banana Republic and Coach.

She also has a small collection of vintage items for sale. This wide variety provides plenty of options for the shopper.

“It’s not your grandma’s thrift store,” Alexander said. While her goal is to keep her trends current, she encourages her shoppers to be imaginative and create the look they want.

“The first fashion rule is to ignore fashion rules,” she said. This quote is the overall motto of the store.

Alexander has lived in St. Augustine for 30 years, but she has wanted her own boutique all of her life. Her shop’s location, which was a historic home just 16 years ago, is over 100 years old.

Before Alexander owned the property, the boutique was called Elite Repeat. The owner wanted to travel, so seven years ago, Alexander bought the shop and moved her ideas in, making it something totally new. Alexander and her sole employee operate the business together five days a week. The store is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Alexander wants her business to continue to grow and is seeking more consignors, especially younger ones.

“My goal is to be open seven days a week,” Alexander said. “I want to be more available for people.”

In order to reach this goal, she needs more inventory from local consignors. She offers all of her consignors 40 percent of what their items sell for, and Flagler students get a 25 percent discount if they can show their Flagler ID. Gabriel’s Closet is located at 155 San Marco Ave., and is open Tuesday through Saturday at 11 a.m.

The consignment days are Tuesday and Thursday.
