Spraggins sets record as Saints roll

Flagler’s volleyball team is hoping to build on last year’s success with the help of some of the high profile recuits brought in for the first NCAA Div. II season

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. − Senior libero Sarah Spraggins (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher HS) tallied 12 digs which not only set a new school career record, but also led Flagler College to a 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-17) win at Palm Beach Atlantic in a non-conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Rubin Arena.

Spraggins broke the mark set by Kristin Hubbard (2000-03) of 1,176 and now has 1,177 in her four-year career.

Flagler improved to 11-5 while Palm Beach Atlantic fell to 4-6.

Junior outside hitter Justine Burkhardt (St. Augustine, Fla./Winthrop U.) recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a match-high 13 kills and 13 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Meg Weathersby (Maitland, Fla./Orangewood Christian School) notched her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and a match-high 17 digs. Senior middle blocker Leah Melton (St. Augustine, Fla./Eckerd College) recorded four total blocks to lead the Saints’ front row.

Sophomore setter Rebecca Royal (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Fleming Island HS) tallied 15 assists while freshman setter Olivia Snipes (Easley, S.C./Easley HS) added 10 more.

Brittany Erickson led the Sailfish with eight kills and 14 digs while Emily Ryerson added 17 assists and four total blocks.

Flagler visits No. 7 (NCAA Division II) Florida Southern College on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Jenkins Field House in Lakeland.

Before that, the team had its winning streak snapped at five and snapped Florida Tech’s 10-match streak on Sept. 13 at the Armstrong Atlantic State University’s Chatham Orthopaedic Volleyball Classic. Flagler lost to Saint Leo 3-0 and wrapped the tournament with a 3-1 win over Florida Tech.
