The Flagler College women’s soccer team concluded its regular season with a win on senior night against conference opponent Georgia College last Saturday.
“The win Saturday was the best feeling all season,” Rebekah Stockowski, senior captain, said. “I have been the only person who has been on the team for four years, and we have never won a senior night since I have been here. Winning on mine was an awesome feeling.”
The Saints ended the season 9-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 in conference play. With the win against Georgia College, the Saints posted its best record in conference play since joining the Peach Belt Conference in 2009.
Flagler concluded the season in a tie for fourth place in conference with Lander University, also its best finish. However, with a 1-0 loss to the Bearcats on Oct. 1, Lander will take the fourth seed in the conference tournament.
Last year the Saints fell one spot short of qualifying for the conference tournament, finishing ninth.
“Lander is a huge rival,” Teddy Meyer, head coach of the women’s soccer team, said. “We’ve just had so many tight games with them. We lost to them our first year in the tournament [2009] which was a 1-0 game. Last year we lost to them 1-0 in regular season. There’s just so much emotion with that team.”
“During this season we lost by one in a hard battle, and now it is revenge,” Stockowski said. “We seriously would not want to be playing any other team. It is our time.”
The Saints and the Bearcats will face off at Lander University on Nov. 1 at 4:30 p.m. The winner of that game will play the winner of the match between number one seed, Armstrong Atlantic State and the number eight seed, Georgia College on Nov. 4 at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.
The championship game will be played on Nov. 6 at Blanchard Woods at 1 p.m.
