Freshman Calvin Meyer won the first Wii tournament held in the Virginia Room last Thursday. Meyer beat 29 other Flagler students that competed playing Mario Kart Wii, and received a $25 gift card to Target.
“I am very excited,” Meyer said after his win. Free sodas were offered.
Each round included four players and the top two advanced to the semi-finals. There were two rounds of semi-finals with three students in each round. Sam Taylor, sophomore, was the student on the event staff. “I knew a lot of people would be here and enjoy it,” he said.
The tournament was competitive and intense. After more than two hours of competition finalists Josh Funk, David Matulewicz, Calvin Meyer and Logun LaMaine remained. They played the Banana Cup and Meyer ended on top.
Grant Nielson, director of the Ringhaver Student Center, sponsored the event and was very happy with the night. “We’ve never put on anything like this before, so I’m very pleased,” he said. Nielson chose to use the Wii system: “It’s very social game, and up to four people can play.”
The Student Center will have a Wii tournament monthly for the rest of the year, with games including Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Wii Fit, and Wii Sports.
