Following a stroke, Nancy Shaver resigned from her position as mayor. With that, Tracy Upchurch, a Flagler College professor who was mayor of St. Augustine from 1990-1992, was voted unanimously by the City Commission to fill her seat last week, and will serve the remainder of her term until Dec. 2020. At a ceremony Monday night, he took oath of office before conducting his first city commission meeting of 2019.
Upchurch took oath of office as mayor of St. Augustine after former mayor, Nancy Shaver, had to resign after having a stroke. Mayor Upchurch hears Ed Slavin’s concerns, a frequent City Commission meeting attendee. The City Commission unanimously voted Mayor Upchurch as Shaver’s replacement because of his extensive experience. From 1990-1992 he served as St. Augustine mayor, he sat on the City Commission from 1988-1992 and he served as a Florida State Representative from 1992-1996. He is also a Flagler College professor and was a practicing attorney for 25 years. Rev. Ron Rawls embraces an indigenous people’s advocate as he goes up to voice his concerns about the state of St. Augustine. Mayor Upchurch is set to complete Shaver’s term, which will end Dec. 7, 2020.
