5 Minutes with surfer Tristan Thompson

Thinking back to how life was at 18 years old, many of us would say that we were simply trying to find our way. We would say that we were searching for colleges to attend after high school, or for full-time employment after earning a diploma.

Each semester the Flagler College Surf Team competes once a month for four months, adding up to a total of eight preliminary contests per year. For every victory or placement, the team earns points. These points are gained to qualify for the East Coast Championship, which takes place early in April.

The club’s goal is to achieve third place or better, which advances them to the NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) college title. Once completed, the surf team takes a trip out west to California in the summer for a week to compete for the national title.

The Flagler College surf team looked to continue its success on Oct.17 at its second contest.

“We have a solid ‘A’ team and a solid ‘B’ team,” said team manager Adam Muller. “We usually don’t lose contests. We are going to win.”

The 5th Annual First Coast Surf Clinic was held Saturday Sept. 22 at the Crescent Beach ramp. The Flagler alumni and local residents as well as Flagler College students and faculty offered great support in learning how to surf. The clinic is a donation only event to benefit the Hugh Shaw memorial scholarship at Flagler College.
