During the holidays, it’s no secret that people tend to spend more money.
Even us poor college kids find ourselves buying gifts for loved ones. This holiday, while you’re spending the money, think about where it’s going – or better, who it could be helping.

Present Moment Café and Kulture Hookah Lounge feel the destructive effects of continued construction on West King Street.
“The construction was supposed to benefit the area,” said Yvette Schindler, owner of Present Moment Café, an organic eatery on the street.
“But, if it doesn’t hurry up, there will be no merchants left,” she said. “It should have been finished sooner. In another area, it would have been finished sooner.”

For Needful Thingz, a music and novelties shop on West King Street, anniversaries are bittersweet.
The store, which opened on Oct. 3, 2008, will close on Saturday, exactly one year after its open, due to economic shortcomings and pending road construction.

Sailor Cher is not afraid of losing her job.
She curses and struts around in a mini skirt and stilettos, proudly displaying the colorful ink all over her body. At age 57, Sailor Cher has such a confident and vivacious personality that is hard not to stare in wonder.

A new Baja Mexican style taco shop opened on Saint George Street early September.
The Taco Shop’s owner, Nicolas Kimball, said he learned most of the recipes featured on the menu in fourth grade on “bring your mom to work day.” He grew up with food and wanted to have a place where others could share his love for tacos.

Dark o’clock is a term pertaining to the hours between sundown and sunrise. As my eyes flew open milli-seconds after my alarm went off at 4 a.m., I recognized my old friend, dark o’clock. We meet regularly in the confines of my bedroom.

As the economic recession takes its toll on St. Augustine, the local music scene is bouncing back. On Friday, Sept. 11, local band Geny Pigs united with international guitarist Dixie Duncan for a concert at Kulture Hookah Lounge on West King Street.
