A formidable smell of cigarettes and stale beer accompanied the crowded in a dimly lit venue called Nobby’s. Despite it’s dilapidated appearance, there was a particular comfort within the tired walls.

In comparison to the colorful, tourist-dotted realm of downtown St. Augustine, Lincolnville is, in some places, dilapidated and desolate.
Here the dings of red trolleys and the clacking of horse hooves are rarely heard. Small businesses and restaurants, which are plentiful downtown, are rare. Some houses are unkempt and have fallen into disrepair.

Upon first glance, the St. Francis House, a light green, two-story townhouse bursting at the seams with color, appears more like a bed and breakfast than a refuge for the homeless. The differences aren’t only skin deep.
Director Renee Morris, like the St. Francis House, proves that appearances can be deceiving. A petite, well-dressed woman with an assertive, to-the-point demeanor, Morris can be intimidating to a stranger. Closer examination reveals an individual with a profound passion for helping others.

A third Harvest of Hope Festival is in the works for 2012, said Phil Kellerman, president of Gainesville-based Harvest of Hope Foundation.
Lack of time and resources prevent the foundation from holding a third festival this spring at the St. Johns County fairgrounds in Elkton.
