Study shows mental health issues rise among college students

Mark Barber finds it very hard to make close friends.

The Flagler College alumnus and graduate student at Syracuse University said he suffers from pervasive developmental disorder, a mental condition similar to Asperger’s syndrome, a mild form of autism. Diagnosed with the disorder when he was 7, Barber said Flagler’s small-school atmosphere helped him to cope with his poor people skills.

Students hold ‘mixed feelings’ on new smoking policy

For senior Mary Stamm, Flagler College’s new smoking policy is a breath of fresh air. Literally.

Stamm suffers from asthma and an allergy to cigarette smoke. She often has to use alternative exits in an attempt to avoid exposure to smoke. When told about the new restrictions Stamm screamed “Yes!”

Sophomore PJ Mistry strives to relieve stress in the midst of her busy lifestyle.

She is a double major in business administration and accounting, as well as a project coordinator in Flagler College Students in Free Enterprise.

Mistry calls her priorities a “four tier balance” system, which includes her family, friends, school and herself.

Flagler confirms two more Swine Flu positive students

Flagler confirmed two more student cases of H1N1 (swine flu), bringing the total confirmed cases to three.

Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs Yvan Kelly confirmed the two additional students with H1N1 are off campus residents. Kelly also said there are 10 students exhibiting flu-like symptoms now.

Other colleges dealing with H1N1 outbreaks

Flagler College isn’t the only school in the region with a sweeping fear of an H1N1 (swine flu) outbreak.
Seven cases of H1N1 popped up at Stetson University in DeLand since the beginning of the school year.

“Seven specimens have come back H1N1 positive since the beginning of this school year, but the kids who have had it are back in class after 3-5 days,” said Stetson’s Health Services Director Debbie Cassidy. “At the beginning of the school year we expected a surge of the flu, and that is what happened.”

Four or five of the children were covered in third-degree burns. One boy was missing a leg. Some were in wheelchairs. One was missing his ears. An older girl stared off into space unable to see, but she was smiling. They all were. They were happy, dancing and singing children.
