Saints nab first soccer wins

Men’s soccer snaps 14-game losing streak against Thomas University

By Ryan Day | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Flagler midfielder Sean Gormley can’t help but laugh when asked what the first victory of the season means to a Flagler’s men’s soccer team that was on the verge of a 15th straight winless game.

“There are so many games where we’ve played well in the first half and then just let it get away,” Gormley said. “To get up on them [Thomas] and finish the way we did raises everyone’s confidence.”

The Saints have started the 2007 season 0-8-1 and were looking at a potential 10th winless game of the season as they took the field against Thomas University on Oct. 6. They notched the season’s second win Nov. 14 at home with a 2-1 victory over Saint Xavier University of Chicago.

Flagler’s men’s and women’s cross country teams are already halfway through their seasons, but with a new women’s coach, and having moved to NCAA, they are already looking ahead in anticipation for next season.

For Christy Calderon-Castelli, the new women’s head coach, it has been a learning experience, but the women runners enjoy finally having a coach of their own.

“Having two separate coaches now has helped everyone out,” senior captain Jamie Stanish said. “It’s nice to have another female to relate to.”

Basketball and business make for strong friendship

By Viv Helwig | gargoyle@flagler.edu

When you think of Business Professor Lou Preysz and Men’s Basketball Coach Bo Clark you think of two men in separate fields, with separate goals, and separate backgrounds.

Preysz, an ex-military man who reached the rank of Captain, and Clark, an “ex-gunner” who ended his college basketball career as the all-time leading scorer for UCF, have more in common than first meets the eye. Under the surface, they both are men of faith, like to keep things lively by constantly cracking jokes, and have banners hanging in the Flagler gym.
