Freshmen trio leads men’s basketball team

By Lindsey Williams | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Among Flagler’s newest basketball recruits, they are the youngest — but don’t let that fool you. Kenny Moore, John Pietkiewicz and DJ Ferguson might be fresh to Flagler’s men’s basketball team, but their talents haven’t fallen short of such demands. I sat down with the three Saints stars to find out how well they have adjusted to Flagler basketball.

To share or not to share?

Even though music can still be downloaded freely over the Internet, users are warned that doing so may cost them.

Despite changes to software, illegal music downloads are still hot-button issue

By Alicia Nierenstein | anierenstein@flagler.edu

At some point or another most students have come across the different versions of popular downloading software called Limewire, Bearshare, Kazaa, and way back in the early days of downloading, Napster.

But, the two important things people should know about these online file-sharing services? They can provide you, for free, almost any piece of media you want to download onto your computer, and they are illegal.

The music industry as a whole certainly takes issue with each of these individual downloading services because, as they give away artists’ music for little to nothing, they are causing a decline in record sales.

A session with Owen Booker

By Matthew Flail | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Owen, the newest addition to the Flagler Surf Team, is a freshman from Haddonfield, N.J. Owen surfs and lifeguards along the Northern Jersey Shore in the summer and snowboards in the winter. He is an energetic guy with a quirky humor that shows in both his surfing and daily activities. Even though Owen is a black belt in both Judo and Karate, don’t hesitate to talk to him.

Music: An athletic energy boost

By Ben McLeod | bmcleod@flagler.edu

Let’s put it this way: Phil Collins is the man. No song gets me psyched for a surf session more than “In the Air Tonight.”

This song is five minutes of bliss because of Phil’s soothing, yet haunting vocals. And yes, you are right, it was in the Tom Cruise movie, “Risky Business.” Is the train scene ringing a bell?

The slow drum machine and ’80s-style guitar makes the song unique, but the best part is the climax. Right when those drums kick in, I say to myself, “This song is dope. I’m going surfing!”

Movie Review: ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

By Taylor Toothman | ttoothman@flagler.edu

“Sweeney Todd” is more than a musical. Way more. It is a slasher flick and epic gore fest with wicked songs and a waltz thrown in.

Johnny Depp has come a long way since “21 Jump Street,” and proves his acting – and singing – worth once again as the titular demon barber who picks the scariest place on earth to have a barber shop. In traditional Tim Burton fashion, this film exceeds expectation in his usual realm of the fancifully sinister. This is by far the most disturbing, dark, and psychotic movie he’s ever made.

By Jennifer Swift | gargoyle@flagler.edu

The Flagler College Auditorium was almost filled to capacity for Friday night’s reading by award-winning novelist Dennis Lehane.

Friday night’s event marked the end of Lehane’s visit to Flagler as the most recent Writer-in-Residence.
Lehane read from his upcoming novel, The Given Day, and took questions from the audience afterwards.

DOW event gives back to troops in Iraq

By Jennifer Swift | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Last semester, “Tailgate for the Troops” became the DOW Advantage Public Relations Group’s most successful fund-raiser to date, raising $500 to benefit U.S. troops stationed overseas.

The money raised was first intended to help finance a Super Bowl party for troops in Kuwait, until the group’s contact in Kuwait advised them the money could not be used for its original purpose.

“My contact in Kuwait felt the money would not be used to its full potential there,” Bailey Toombs said. Toombs, a senior at Flagler, originally developed the idea for “Tailgate for the Troops.”

Internet videos are turning to violence

Filmed ‘Bumfights’ shows the inhumane side of viral video trends

By Haley M. Walker | gargoyle@flagler.edu

I know that the Internet is a great apparatus for information, research and communication. I know this because I use it for each of those things often.

However, I think that I have been incredibly naïve to the fact that this instrument that we use every day can be used as a medium to display some of the most barbaric and inhumane portraits of society today.

Recently, I have been made aware of something called “Bumfights” on the Web, and I feel like it was noteworthy and berserk enough to share with you.

Hopefully, you will be as disgusted as I am by this so called “trend.”

The things Henry Flagler never sees

By Danielle Marsh | dmarsh1@flagler.edu

Roommates. You either hit the jackpot, or wake up to find out someone has given you a new hair style. I have personally been blessed to have the roommate I do.

Despite the fact she is from the U.S. Virgin Islands, we have a lot in common, especially our taste for adventure and sick sense of humor.

We have had so many adventures together, there is no way of putting a number to it. Let’s just say in the past two years we have done so many insane things, even Britney would step back and gasp.
