Student gets strength from high schoolers

By Kathy Novak | gargoyle@flagler.edu

I attend college classes all day, but afterwards I go back to high school.

This is because I coach an incredible young women’s lacrosse team at Pedro Menendez. I feel thankful to be involved with the youth of today and to be in touch with molding the future. It will be three years ago this January that I was asked to help be an assistance coach of the team.

I had just moved from Maryland, often called “The Land of Lacrosse,” to a state where half the people here didn’t even know how to spell it.

‘Ignite’ classes encourage student interaction

By Erica Eding | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Christine Young is part of the biggest freshman class Flagler has ever seen, but she spends most of her time with the same group of people. She’s part of Ignite, Flagler College’s new learning community program.

Young and her 20-something classmates have three General Education courses together. After class they work on group projects which incorporate aspects of each class. The students are even together at night.

“You’re roomed with someone also in the program,” Young said.

Letter From an Alien

It finally hit me two days ago. I moved to China. Like, I am here and don’t have a ticket back to America. I live here and work here and have a residents permit. These are my people. This is my neighborhood, and I am here for the long haul. I have house keys and a bike and a bank account (that I can’t read) and this is my life. I just realized this three weeks into my life in Hangzhou.

And you know what? After it hit me, I thought…”cool.”

Freshman Calvin Meyer won the first Wii tournament held in the Virginia Room last Thursday. Meyer beat 29 other Flagler students that competed playing Mario Kart Wii, and received a $25 gift card to Target.

“I am very excited,” Meyer said after his win. Free sodas were offered.

The everyday life of a college student gets monotonous after a while. From mind-numbing classes to excruciatingly boring homework, students deserve a break and peace of mind, if only for one day a month.

Art Galleries of St. Augustine gives that day to students as well as to all other members of the St. Augustine community.

They sponsor the First Friday Art Walk, an event rich in culture, originality and enthusiasm for art in its many forms.

Regular participants in the monthly event include Butterfield Garage Art Gallery, The Pegasus Gallery, Energy Lab Gallery, Rembrantz Fine Gifts, The Gallery at Screen Arts, Rachel Thompson Gallery, Classic Blends, Flagler College’s Crisp-Ellert Art Museum and many others, each featuring new and distinct exhibits.

Third and Long

It made my week. That the Eagles game was aired in Arizona this past Sunday.

Not only that it was aired, but that I got to see them win against the Steelers. Buoy-yah! Strangely enough, their punter Sav Rocca came up big and really made a difference in the game.

The only downfall of getting to see my team play was that I exhausted myself screaming in both elation and frustration, and my throat hurt the rest of the night. I had forgotten about the physical impact that watching the Eagles had on me. But oddly, I loved it at the same time.
