Locals weigh in on TOMS shoes trend

By Emily Hoover | ehoover@flagler.edu

For Flagler College junior Joshua Weaver, TOMS shoes are more than casual and comfortable shoes that complete every outfit and represent personal style—they promote a worthy cause that affects everyone, from the first world to the third.

“I first heard about TOM shoes when I was a senior in high school [in 2008],” he said. “I had a friend in a band that was sponsored by TOM shoes. I read their mission statement, loved their style and the one for one business model. I thought: ‘I love that idea. I’m going to buy them.’ ”

We Are Never Truly Alone

By Caroline Young | gargoyle@flagler.edu

It was the only time in my life I actually thought I wanted to die. I crawled from the bottom bunk in my tiny Georgetown dorm I was sharing with another girl for two months last summer. I grabbed my cell phone and dialed the one person I call when I do not know what to do – my mother.

The world of energy drinks

By Jason Bell | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Without even thinking, I pick up a Monster Energy drink to do homework or even before I go out for the night. Much like sleeping, it’s almost a necessity to life. With school work and a social life to upkeep, energy drinks have become a regular staple in my diet. As I look on the side of the can it reads, “Tear into a can of the meanest energy supplement on the planet, MONSTER energy.” This makes me think “What the heck am I putting into my body?”

For Nelsie Gordon, Flagler College theatre arts major, directing a one-act play for her senior conservatory class also means preparing for motherhood. She and her husband, Brandon, are expecting their first child in June.

“His name is Ethan and he’s been in four shows,” Gordon, 20, said. “I’m nervous about the labor part, but, honestly, no matter how ready you think you are or aren’t, you have to make yourself ready [for parenthood].”

Can’t fight this feeling…

By Lauren Belcher | cbelcher@flagler.edu

Webster’s dictionary defines a void as: not occupied; vacant; not inhabited; deserted; containing nothing. That sounds about right.
I define a void as: sadness; depression; loneliness; fear; defeat.

For as long as I can remember, I have tried to fill the void. I’m always trying to keep myself distracted so I won’t feel like I’m alone.

It starts when I go home. I check Facebook and I have no new notifications. I check my e-mail and see that no one needs me for anything.

My homework is complete, my house is tidy…The panic sets in.
