Gibson wins primary, becomes District One state senator

On Sept. 20, a primary was held in St. Johns County to decide which candidate will represent the Democratic Party in the October 18 Special election in District One. The winner was Representative Audrey Gibson. Gibson was suppose to face right in candidate Andrea Austin in this election, but Austin withdrew from the election.


Organization ships ‘love’ to military members

On Saturday September 12, military families all throughout the state of Florida came to the St. Augustine Elks Lodge post to contribute to Molly’s Adopt a Sailor, We Ship Love division. With people writing cards, assembling the boxes, separating the donations and packing boxes, people gathered to show their support of those who are overseas.


News Brief: UF acquires historic St. Augustine properties

The University of Florida has recently gained all managerial responsibilities of select historic landmarks and properties within the Historic District of St. Augustine.

UF devised a strategic plan in 2009 addressing the uses of the historical sites in terms of visitors and exhibits as well as maintenance. The plan also addresses the community factors, including the social and cultural elements of the Historic District of St. Augustine.


Remembering John Rice

John Rice, who oversaw custodial services at Flagler and had been a fixture on the campus for more than three decades, died on Sept. 25 at the age of 53.


Volleyball team beats Montevallo

The Flagler College volleyball team served up a huge win against the University of Montevallo on Saturday, Sept. 24th.

Last year, Flagler’s only Peach Belt Conference loss came at the hands of Montevallo, but once again the Saints proved their ability to succeed in the Peach Belt Conference.


Women’s soccer team tries not to lose momentum

The Flagler College women’s soccer team’s record fell to 4-2 after a 3-0 loss on Sunday afternoon in a conference match against Columbus State University.

After beginning the season 4-0, the best start since the program started in 1995, the Saints have recorded losses to Lynn University and Columbus State University.


Men’s soccer team beats Francis Marion

The Flagler College men’s soccer team played Francis Marion Saturday night, even though Francis Marion didn’t seem to do much playing at all. Flagler dominated the competition early and from the first few minutes of the game, Flagler seemed to overwhelm their opponent.


Social networking: more than a place for friends

It was a late July night when the sound of my vibrating phone on my nightstand woke me from my sleep. The bright glow of the LCD screen burned my retinas as I squinted to read that I had a message from Facebook. Ren Anderson would like to be your friend on Facebook. I set the phone down ignoring this person I assumed was probably from high school and fell peacefully back into my slumber.


Senior experiences emotional tremors from Japanese earthquake

One text message never made Emi Miyao feel farther away from home.

Around 1:30 am on March 11, Miyao woke to find the message, “8.8 magnitude earthquake in Japan,” on her cell phone. After finding the news for herself on the Internet, she immediately e-mailed her parents in Akita, Japan. It took them another day to let her know that everything was all right, since the earthquake took out the city’s electricity.


Is healthy eating a luxury? Locals reveal cheap tips to eating right

For St. Augustine resident Sarah Alarcon, healthy eating is a luxury.

Because she said she lives on a small budget, and does not have a car, everyday expenses like housing and bill payments often come before eating nutritious meals. As a result, she said she worries about her health.

“My health situation is often terrible,” Alarcon, 21, said. “After I pay my bills, that change is how I get taxis to go to the store to buy food. Sometimes, that leaves me with $30 [for food shopping.]”
