Despite scandal, Catholics defend their faith

The Roman Catholic Church has been in the news again for more of the same — of years of child rape and abuse in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Once news broke of retired Cardinal Roger Mahony concealing child rape and abuse by priests under his charge for more than a decade, he was relieved of all duties. Mahony’s protection of abusive priests is not he first such case in the Catholic Church.


The rise to glory: women’s basketball team sets sights on record season

The final minutes couldn’t go any slower for the Flagler women’s basketball team, but when the clock hit zero, they knew Feb. 20 will be a day to remember.

After winning only two games (four overall) last season, the women’s basketball team clinched a Peach Belt Conference playoff berth for the first time ever. The team is having a turnaround season, owning a conference record of 10-8 (13-11 overall). With two games left, they have the opportunity to have a winning season for the first time in five years, according to Head Coach Lang-Montgomery.


St. Francis Director helps homeless through tough love

Upon first glance, the St. Francis House, a light green, two-story townhouse bursting at the seams with color, appears more like a bed and breakfast than a refuge for the homeless. The differences aren’t only skin deep.
Director Renee Morris, like the St. Francis House, proves that appearances can be deceiving. A petite, well-dressed woman with an assertive, to-the-point demeanor, Morris can be intimidating to a stranger. Closer examination reveals an individual with a profound passion for helping others.


Is American ‘extremism’ on the rise?

In a decade of weeklong juice cleanses, five-minute abs and organic-only eating, it begs the question: are we a society of extremists or are we simply trying to reach perfection?

Three former Saints look back on their first year as pros

Since 1985, Flagler College has had 16 players drafted by major league teams.

In the 2012 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, three former Saints — Garrett Bush, Jonathon Arnold, and John Sgromolo — were drafted by the Angels, Brewers, and Dodgers respectively.

Arnold, a right-handed pitcher, was drafted in the 30th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. He pitched a combined 15 games (33 innings) between the Helena Brewers of the Pioneer League, and the Brewers in the Arizona League.
