Station Renovation: WFCF gets a face lift

This year will mark Flagler College Radio’s 20th birthday, and some pivotal moments in the station’s timeline.

During the last 20 years, the student and volunteer staff have been busy creating one of the best non-commercial educational broadcast radio stations in the nation. In 2012, WFCF was rated as the 17th best college radio station in the nation by the Princeton Review, and was added last year as one of 20 exclusive iHeart Radio college stations.

This year, big changes are coming to WFCF and the Communication Department, most prominently in the form of a brand new facility for the station.

After many years of planning, revisions, and more planning, WFCF will soon have a new home. Currently located within the COM building, the radio station will be moved to its own building on 65 Cuna Street, in between Pop N’ Off, the popcorn store, and the current COM building.

The new radio station will feature brand new, state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment.

Station Manager, Dan McCook, is making sure current station operations will not be interrupted until the move to the new location, and is hoping to minimize any potential disruptions to ensure the smoothest transition possible.

While timelines are subject to change, it is expected that everything should be in place for the station’s official 20th birthday on November 1st.

Bulldozers have already begun digging up the back parking lot of the communication building so that an archeological excavation can assess the historical attributes of the property.

The station has seen a number of students come and go, and the new building comes at a bittersweet time for some. Current Student Station Manager, Lauren Luna, has invested the majority of her college career in the station, and will have already graduated by the time the new station is functional, but had this to say:

I am so blessed and excited to have been a part of WFCF reaching its 20 years of operation. These past four years with Dan and WFCF have provided me with invaluable experience and I couldn’t be more thankful.
