By Keith Hayes | gargoyle@flagler.edu

The Flagler College men’s soccer team was victorious in its home match Sept. 18 against University of North Carolina Pembroke.

The match was the team’s second conference game of the season, and first conference win.

Ned Hunt, assistant coach, said the three players who had key roles in the win were Daniel Reid, Zach Shanahan and Pol Berenquer.

Playing in his first game back from injury, Reid was able to spark the Saints’ defense. Shanahan provided great offense by scoring the second goal of the match, as well as an assist on a goal by Mack Hough. Berenquer, said Hunt, “was able to control the field.”

The Saints current overall record is 6-2.

Women’s soccer loses at home

The Flagler women’s soccer team lost on Sept. 18 at Saints Field to UNC Pembroke 2-0.

UNC Pembroke scored their first goal in the twenty-first minute of the match when Brittany Padilla put back her own shot. This goal proved to be all the scoring the Braves would need in the match.

On Wednesday, Sept. 22, the Saints defeated Eckerd 2-0. In a match that was deadlocked at 0-0 for 81-minutes, the Saints finally broke through and went up 1-0.

According to Head Coach Teddy Meyer, despite the two goals scored, his squad needed to get its intensity up.

“We haven’t been playing our kind of soccer,” Meyer said. “We play possession soccer and we haven’t been able to do that.”

The Saints current overall record is 3-4-1.

Men’s cross counrty runs alone in meet
By Taylor Laskoski | gargoyle@flagler.edu

Even though they were the only team to show up to the Black and Gold Challenge at the University of Central Florida, Flagler College junior Alex Bonus said the Flagler College men’s cross country team kept their spirits high.

The event, held on Sept. 10, was the first meet of the year for the men’s team. Rollins College was supposed to bring both their men’s and women’s teams, but only brought the women’s team, forcing Flagler’s team to run by themselves.

“Taking that into consideration, it was still a great meet,” Bonus said. “Everyone ran well and we all finished pretty close together, so even though we don’t have any results, it was a solid effort and a good team-building experience.”
