Saints volleyball’s strong start continues

Losing a home opener to start off a season that was arguably filled with the highest expectations in recent memory isn’t easy, but that changed when the women’s volleyball team fell to Sioux Falls. While most programs would re-evaluate and think about what kind of season lied ahead, Coach Matt Affolder and his seniors charged into the Flagler Invite where they defeated every team put in front of them decisively.

Following the loss to Sioux Falls something incredible happened that no one would have imagined as the Saints have strung off seven straight victories. With the exception of Anderson, S.C, which took Flagler to the five set limit, the Saints have shown the nation that they are the team to be reckoned with.

“I think it’s important to open up the season strong, and get some wins as a team,” said Junior Megan Hooks about winning seven in a row to bounce back from a loss.

This team comes into 2015 with not the most experienced roster in the Peach Belt Conference, having a handful of sophomores and freshmen. But these aren’t your ordinary underclassmen. Tara Savisky and Shea Hamilton have come in to Affolder’s program and fit the role of key pieces for this squad.

Senior Ashley Lechleidner Rodriguez is passionate about this win streak and the kind of effort the team is putting forth. “Its been a total team effort,” she said. “Each one of us is always ready to face any challenge, and that alone is what is so special about this team.”

Coming in to Tuesday night’s contest against the Colorado Christian Cougars, the Saints faced an unfamiliar foe with little info about their playing style. The first set saw the Saints fall to the Cougars only to come together as a team to win three straight and continue the streak to seven matches.

“It was a great match for everyone and we look forward to even greater ones in the future,” said star Sophomore Sara Davis.

Megan Hooks feels that the team really made a statement with their perseverance against this unfamiliar opponent.

“I think the fact we came back and won the last three really showed the resilience and passion of our team,” Hooks added.

The Saints continue their hot start on Saturday as they venture down south to Fort Lauderdale to take on the Nova Southeastern Sharks. The teams recent success should bring them nothing, but confidence for this weekends matchup.
