Gargoyle photographer David James Castagno photographed and interviewed bicyclist and Flagler College student Rob Schanz for this photo essay on fixed-gear bikes.

Rob Schanz has been riding fixed gear bicycles for two and a half years. Schanz, a Flagler College senior, not only rides for fun, but also as a means of transportation.

On a fixed gear bike the rear cog has the inability to coast.

With no breaks, the only way to stop is by peddling backwards, or locking up, to skid.

Track stands create a diversity to everyday riding.

"I've become fixed on fixies. It's an adrenaline rush like no other," said Schanz. "Riding through traffic, it's just a rush, ya know?"

"At the end of the day, you have to treat your bike like your car. Upkeep is everything," he said.
