News Brief: UF acquires historic St. Augustine properties

The University of Florida has recently gained all managerial responsibilities of select historic landmarks and properties within the Historic District of St. Augustine.

UF devised a strategic plan in 2009 addressing the uses of the historical sites in terms of visitors and exhibits as well as maintenance. The plan also addresses the community factors, including the social and cultural elements of the Historic District of St. Augustine.

In 2010, the state supplied UF with plant operation and maintenance funds for the management of the various properties.

One of the properties now under UF management is the Government House Museum, located on the corner of St. George and Cathedral streets. The government house has served many uses, including a courthouse, the capitol of the new territory of Florida, and even a post office. In addition to housing a museum, the Government House also holds offices of the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board.
