Men’s soccer team beats Francis Marion

The Flagler College men’s soccer team played Francis Marion Saturday night, even though Francis Marion didn’t seem to do much playing at all. Flagler dominated the competition early and from the first few minutes of the game, Flagler seemed to overwhelm their opponent.

In the 2nd minute of the game, Johan Bergfeld scored after receiving a ball that was crossed into the box from the left side of the field. The Francis Marion keeper didn’t have a chance as Bergfeld’s shot was high and fast. Flagler scored their second goal two minutes later when Pol Berenguer chipped a pass over the head of a defender to Eammon Murphy, who placed his shot into the lower left side of the net.

The first half ended with Flagler leading Francis Marion, 2-0. In a game that was very much one-sided, there were only a few factors which Flagler could not control. In the first half of the game, there were a high amount of handballs committed by the Francis Marion squad, most of which were not whistled for.

Adam Jackson, the left defenseman for Flagler, played an exceptional game and had strong presence on the field. Jackson’s play in the backfield was solid, as was his vocal leadership. Jackson used his height advantage and became virtually unchallenged in the air, winning every header in his area.

The second half became much more physical with harder tackles. With Flagler’s growing lead, the Francis Marion team started to play with greater tenacity. Most of the play was clean with the referee signaling to continue play, but Berenguer did receive a yellow card for committing a hard foul.

Second half goals were scored by Mack Hough, Stephen Pratt and Triston Hall.
The game ended with Flagler winning, 5-0.
