Men’s soccer loss ends big season

The Flagler College Saints (14-6-2, 7-1-0 PBC) lost 4-0 to Wingate University (13-4-1, 6-1-1 SAC) of the South Atlantic Conference in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. The Saints seven match unbeaten streak ended and their best season in many years came to a close.

The game moved from Wingate University to a local high school, one which had an artificial turf field, because heavy rains made Winchester’s field unplayable. The game time weather was cold, windy, and rainy.

Wingate opened the scoring 6 minutes in when Luke Mulholland finished a cross in front of goal. Jamie McKenna extended the lead with 16 minutes left in the first half.

Wingate’s Felippe Imperatriz put the game away in the second half. He scored two goals to secure the victory. Flagler had almost as many shots, and an even number of corner kicks as Wingate, but could not find the net.

For the Saints, it is a tough way to end the season.

Flagler, a first year Peach Belt Conference team, lost only one conference game and were regular season champions. They narrowly lost the conference tournament final in a penalty shootout, technically a draw.

The Saints had many Peach Belt Conference weekly award winners. In addition, Johan Bergfeld was a first team all-conference award winner, and Pol Berenguer, Kevin Partel and Conor Killeen were second team all-conference winners. Toby Joseph won Freshman of the Year.

Coach of the Year honors went to Head Coach John Lynch, who won his 100th game coaching the Saints.
