Men’s soccer advances to quarterfinals

The Flagler College men’s soccer team rolled through their opponents this past weekend in a tough two-game stretch. Their first game of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional tournament was played against Lees-McRae on Friday, Nov. 11 in South Carolina. Flagler scored a golden goal in overtime that gave them the 2-1 victory.

Flagler then played their next game on Sunday against Mars Hill College in the Southeast Regional final. The outcome wasn’t nearly as close as their previous game. Flagler took control from the beginning and didn’t stop until the end.

Senior midfielder Johan Bergfeld was pleased with his team’s 3-0 victory.

“I think it is one of the best game’s we’ve played all year,” Bergfeld said.

Up next for the Saints is the national quarterfinal. They will be playing Lynn University, which was the winner of the South Regional Final. Flagler has already beaten Lynn this year in a 3-2 victory back on Oct. 4.

Bergfeld said Flagler will continue to play great soccer. They are looking forward to a rematch with Lynn, he said.

“We’re probably just going to stick to our usual game plan. It worked before against Lynn. But if something needs to be changed, then we can do it during the game,” Bergfeld said.

The quarterfinal game will be played on Saturday, but the location has yet to be determined. Flagler is hoping for the home-field advantage.

“We’re going to take a few days off to let everyone rest. We’ll probably get back into practicing within the next couple of days,” Bergfeld said. He also added that everyone is healthy and that they will be at full strength come Saturday’s match.
