Men’s basketball year in review

Flagler College men’s basketball finished their second year in the Peach Belt Conference with mixed results. There were plenty of highs this season, but ultimately the season ended in another disappointment.

The Saint’s finished with a record of 10-16. At home, the team played consistently the entire season, posting a 7-7 record. The real troubles were on the road, where the team finished only 2-7.Peach Belt Conference play proved to be a difficult task throughout the season as the team finished with only four conference wins. Flagler failed to make the conference tournament for the second year in a row.

The biggest disappointment of the season will be the loss of the four seniors on the roster. John Pietkiewicz finished the season with 17.5 points per game and was selected to the All Peach Belt Conference Third-Team. D.J. Ferguson ends his career as the conferences all time assist leader. The other seniors on the team are Eddie Fowler and Kenny Moore.

The season did have a few high points that showed how well the team can really play together. On December 4th, Flagler defeated the No. 5 ranked team in the country USC Aiken. On January 5th, Flagler defeated No. 3 ranked Augusta State. These huge upsets showed just how well this team could perform on any given night.

Looking ahead to next season, the big question is who will step up to replace the productivity of the departing players, and whether or not the Saints can overcome that adversity and become more consistent.
