Local potter brings ancient inspiration to St. Augustine

Worley Faver is an artist who takes the view back to the days of the great epic hero Odysseus.

A native to St. John’s County, Faver is the owner of Worley Faver Pottery on Aviles Street, St. Augustine’s oldest street. His creations not only come from his artistic eye, but from his own intuition and inspiration.

“I find clay to be a portal to expanding my spiritual ties to the earth and all creation,” Faver said.
He approaches each piece with meditation, tranquility and a reference to the past. He said he lives by the words of his favorite epic hero, Odysseus: “All art is laughter to relieve us from life’s griefes.”

When creating his ceramic art, refers to Odysseus’s words and uses ancient techniques that allow him to hand produce his pottery pieces with a unique touch.

A member of the Potter Council of the American Ceramic Society, Faver’s gallery and artwork is not a job, but a passion. On every First Friday Art Walk, his gallery opens it’s doors for others to enjoy. And art enthusiasts have more to look at than his finished work. Faver’s potter’s wheel is inside the gallery so visitors may see his creative process.

Faver’s artwork has been featured in many events including the Haskell Gallery at The Jacksonville International airport, Jacksonville Art Walk and Charles B. Goddard Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.
For this potter, the cool feel of clay spinning between his fingers extends further than the art form. It is a transcendental activity.

“The universe has many lessons to teach us if we will be calm and listen,” he said.
