Dr. Timothy Johnson, associate professor of Religion and chairman of the Liberal Studies Department at Flagler College, will be taking a sabbatical at the Franciscan Institute at St. Bonaventure University for the fall semester.
A sabbatical is when a professor takes time off for professional development. The Franciscan Institute, a center of research on the Franciscan movement, is located in upstate New York, outside of Buffalo.
“Franciscan Institute is allowing me the opportunity to finally finish my two books that I have been working on,” Johnson said.
One book will be an English translation of Bonaventure’s Latin called “Sunday Sermons,” and the other is the “Medieval Franciscan,” a volume on prayer.
Franciscan Institute and Johnson have had a long-standing relationship and they contacted him via E-mail, offering him the visiting position for the fall semester. Johnson has taught in the graduate program at Franciscan Institute in the past.
He has never participated in a sabbatical but has participated in the William J. Fulbright Scholarship in Germany in the summer of 2004.
Johnson is looking forward to finishing his two books and returning to Flagler College in the Spring.
History professor Tom Graham is taking his position as chair of the Liberal Studies program for the fall semester.
